MONASH FOYER UPGRADE – Melbourne

This project involved the internal upgrade of the existing ground level lift lobby/foyer of Monash University’s Collins Street City Campus and Convention Facility. The design brief called for a visually striking intervention, easily executed within a limited timeframe without major alteration to the physical fabric of the interior. Due to the space’s position – situated within the dimly luminated undercroft linking Collins Street with Ridgway Place, it was decided to generate a design using highly contrasted colour and directional lighting to the floor and ceiling planes, without isolating the visual presence of existing wall finishes. The resulting space is polarised by the deliberate over-abundance of light and the mirror-clad column at one end, and the painted darkness of the other, concealing the service stair, basement access and fire services cupboard.
